My 2018 Beauty and Style MVPs
This past year saw a huge change in buying behavior for me. The second half of my year was focused on a more concerted effort in minimalism and conscious consumption. I want to quickly highlight some of my workhorse items that I reached for over and over throughout 2018.
I made a concerted effort to simplify my makeup & skincare routines this year, and I think I’ve succeeded. I have a history of sampling, hoarding, and ordering way more than I need. I really took a step back and tried to use up what I already had, and this helped me identify which products work for me every day. When compiling this list, I thought about whether or not I used the product for at least half the year (this rules out predicted MVPs for 2019 like the Kosas Tinted Face Oil, which I got within the last few months).
MASCARA | ILIA Limitless Lash Mascara - Defines, lengthens, separates, and volumizes. I tried another mascara out of curiosity and ended up going back to this one. A perfect companion to a lash lift.
EYELINER | Gressa Eye Tint (in Obscur) - This was the year I simplified my makeup routine; most notably my eye makeup. Most days I just smudged this along my lash line. Impressive staying power.
BROW PENCIL | Jane Iredale Retractable Brow Pencil (in Dark Brunette) - The cleanest dupe to Anastasia’s Brow Wiz. When I ran out, I used another brow product I had lying around but eventually repurchased this because it’s so convenient and easy to use.
BROW GEL | Glossier Boy Brow (in Brown) - Similar hold to Anastasia, without the crunchiness. Lesson learned: Clear does not have the same hold as Brown. Similar to the ILIA mascara, I tried another brow gel and ended up going back to this.
CONTOUR POWDER | Alima Pure Sombra Contour Powder - Perfect for subtle everyday looks and special events, provides as much definition and depth as you need.
LIPSTICK | Lip Lab x Bite Beauty Custom Lipstick (in Trenna) - This custom shade prompted me to get rid of most of my lipstick collection. Custom color cosmetics is a luxury, but such a treat. I’d like to make a tinted balm version of this for every day wear.
DEODORANT | Kaia Naturals Takesumi Detox Charcoal Deodorant - I think I may have finally found my HG natural deodorant. I’ve tried a few scents, but Lime Mint is my favorite so far.
EYE CREAM | Tata Harper Illuminating Eye Cream - Hydrating and brightening - an eye cream that saves me from random eye skin irritations.
PERFUME | Ellis Brooklyn Myth Eau de Parfum - Every day. Such a lovely scent.
LIP BALM | Badger Balm Lip Balm - Also every day. Multiple times a day. Holy grail status. I have multiple tubes in bags and drawers. The Mint calms any dermatitis that happens periodically.
I only started getting into slow fashion in April, right around when I participated in the Spring 10x10 Wardrobe Challenge. I kept reaching for a few items I already owned, but really filled out holes in my wardrobe the last eight months of the year.
TEE | Tradlands Girlfriend T-Shirt - I could not wash this beautiful Sienna tee fast enough.
JEANS | Madewell Cruiser Straight Jeans (Similar) - The pair of denim that made me fall in love with the straight leg. Also made me a believer in comfortable high-waisted denim.
WIDE LEG PANTS | Everlane Wide Leg Crops - This pair of warm Ochre pants showed me what was possible with the wide leg!
BAG | Lo & Sons The Pearl Bag (old) - This was my go-to before the Angela Roi. Still such a good travel bag. The Dark Grey Saffiano is a nice neutral.
SNEAKERS | Vans Old Skool Pro Sneakers - Goes with everything and so so comfortable.
SNEAKERS | Allbirds Wool Runners (old) - The Kotare Sand was not the warm tan I was hoping for, but comfortable nonetheless. Got me through physical therapy.
BAG | Angela Roi Madeline Mini Bucket Bag - Purchased this during a sample sale. I have been using it every day since I got it.
It was really cool to reflect on this past year in this way - compiling this list was surprisingly easy. I take that as a sign that I’m heading in the direction I want (fewer, better items). Let me know if you have any questions, I’d love to hear about your own MVPs!
