La Bella Donna Liquid Eyeliner Pen Review
Note: This post was originally published on 11/16/15 on my old blog, Not Safe For May.
Ah, liquid liner. Quite possibly the most difficult makeup product to replace when going green. I've tried a handful and have yet to find one that stands up to my beloved Stila All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner. I probably won't, considering all the icky ingredients in the Stila Liner are what makes it perform so well, but I'm hopeful! Today I want to talk a little about an eyeliner pen I tried recently by La Bella Donna.
First things first: This eyeliner pen does contain phenoxyethanol, an alternative preservative to parabens that some may wish to stay away from because of possible irritation (read more here). I personally am fine with the inclusion of phenoxyethanol in some of my products, so long as it's not in every single one I use every day. Especially if it's in a really great product. Everything in moderation, right?
I guess that's where we should start - this eyeliner pen isn't going to be one of those exceptions for me. Sadly, it didn't live up to my expectations. Given, those expectations may be impossible ones set by the likes of Stila and Kat Von D, but this product was a definite miss for me.
I prefer my liquid liners in pen form as I feel that I have more control. Packaging-wise, LBD hits the mark on this one. The tip isn't as fine as Stila's - it's longer and thicker. Still something I was willing to work with, though.
Compared to Stila's 0.016 oz, you get more than double the product with LBD. However, that isn't worth much if the formula isn't up to par. LBD's formula is really hard to work with. It's really dry and I had a hard time drawing a smooth line. The ink comes out patchy and leaves bald spots, and when I tried to go back over them, the formula flaked off and created more inconsistencies in the line. Coupled with the bigger tip, I wasn't able to get a crisp wing. It took me twice as long to do my eyeliner. Here are some swatches to really illustrate what I mean:
Note the patchy and inconsistent swatch on paper. Also note the bald spot at the beginning of the LBD skin swatch, and how matte its ink is compared to Stila.
The longevity of the formula didn't fare well with me, either. I have oily eyelids to begin with, so finding eye products that stay on all day is difficult enough already. I tried this liner alone, over shadow, and over Red Apple Lipstick's Prime Time Shadow Primer, but none of these situations saw the liner last more than 4 hours before flaking and fading.
I ended up returning the eyeliner pen. I hate to do negative reviews, but I want to share my honest experience with you guys. I haven't tried any other LBD products, so please don't take this review as a reflection of the brand as a whole. I wouldn't rule them out just because of this unfortunate experience. Has anyone else tried this pen? Perhaps maybe had a different experience? I'd love to hear other thoughts!
